Winter League 2021/2022 Round 17

 

Siamo Sirens vs Turners Tornados

Saturday’s fixtures began with Siamo Sirens and Turners Tornados taking to the court. The competition was evenly matched throughout and Sirens took the lead in the first half, with Laura Stuckey feeding some excellent balls into her teams attackers. At half time, the score was 17-10 to Sirens.

However, Tornados did not give up, and the defensive duo of Shrelle P-B and Nat Solomons stepped it up a gear, making it extremely difficult for Sirens shooters to score. Despite the defensive efforts of Sirens goal defence, Keely Russell, Turners Tornados took the win, with a final score of 29-24.

 

Snowfinders vs Aircare Lightning  

Second on court saw a close match up between Aircare Lightning and Snowfinders. After the first quarter, Lightning was up by 5 goals, with excellent shooting from Emma Hadkiss and defence from Yvonne Moore. However, Snowfinders remained within the game, challenging Lightning across the court. At half time, the score gap remained the same, with a score of 23-28 to Lightning.

The second half was a battle of the centre court, with Snowfinders players Hattie Bates, Sabrina Berry and Becca Wayman linking well and dominating the centre court. In the final quarter, Lightning pushed through, with some excellent play from centre Amy Haywood, helping to secure the win for her side. The final score was 42-55 in favour of Aircare Lightning.

 

Vanelli Vixens vs Harborough Harriers

In the next game, the young Vanelli Vixens took to court against the Harborough Harriers. True to their previous form, the Vixens were quick to take control of the game, with Chloe Woodard and Katie Bensi showing skill in feeding precise balls into goal attack, Sophie Pounds, who rarely missed a shot. At half time, the score as 45-29 to Vixens.

Keen to stay within touching distance of the Vixens, the Harriers worked tirelessly to turnover ball and decrease the score line. Harriers goal defence Wendy Cray, and goal attack, Emma Walker, showed their skill and determination at both ends of the court. However, Vixens proved to be too strong and the final score was 57-42 to Vanelli Vixens.

 

Aircare Thunder vs Foxton Flyers  

Next up saw a clash between middle of the table teams, Aircare Thunder and Foxton Flyers, both keen to take the win. It was the Flyers who came out fighting and quickly secured a healthy lead, despite Thunders goal defence, Maisie Williamson, doing her best to slow down the Flyers shooters. At half time, the Flyers were up by 10 goals, with a score of 24-14.

The second half saw more of the same, with Flyers defence, Laura Burgess and Jackie Latham dominating the circle, making it hard for Thunders attack to score. Thunders Lily Horton showed determination in the centre court to turnover and deliver ball to the attacking end. Unfortunately, it wasn’t enough to slow down Foxton Flyers, who took the win 54-32.

 

CC Wellbeing vs Foxton Mavericks  

The penultimate game saw two teams who sit at top of the table take to court – Foxton Mavericks vs CC Wellbeing. The game started goal for goal and Jackie Brooks showed her precision in feeding balls to her shooters for CC Wellbeing. However, Mavericks Jodie Bellamy and Jenny Dance piled on the defensive pressure, helping to secure the lead for the Mavericks at half time, 35-26.

The second half saw an exciting match up between Mavericks shooter, Nat Billington, and CC Wellbeings defence Katie Hillesberg, who challenged each other well in the circle. However, Mavericks had the better of CC Wellbeing on this occasion and took the win, with the final score being 75-48.

 

Club Correze vs Welland Valley Blinders

The final game of this round of fixtures was between Club Correze and Welland Valley Blinders. Club Correze, who have been formidable this season, did not disappoint. Sharp shooting from Mia Baker and Kim Walton were quick to put their side in the lead, despite defensive pressure from Blinders goal defence, Karena Matthews-Donowa. At half time, the score was 32-10 to Club Correze.

The latter half of the game saw more of the same, however the new and building Blinders side did not give up. Krish Darji showed her skill and control in the centre court for Blinders and shooter, Jo MacDonald, showed composure in the circle to increase their goal count. Club Correze proved to be very strong opposition and took the win 74-15.
