Winter League 2021/2022 Round 16

 

Vanelli Vixens v Foxton Flyers

This week saw six teams take the court. The day opened with a thrilling game between the Vanelli Vixens and the Foxton Flyers. The Flyers started the game strong. Sara Mangen got her eye in in the Goal Shooter position from the off. The Flyers took the first quarter 14-12. Having been caught off guard, the Vixens regrouped at quarter time and came back with determination. Evie Van Neirop was dynamic in the Vixens defensive circle, staying close and winning the turnovers the Vixens needed to pull it back. Consolidating, Sophie Pounds made some great shots in the Vanelli attacking circle. At half time the Vixens were leading 24 goals to 22.

The third quarter saw both teams increase the pressure. In the centre court, Katie Bensi maintained the energy, never letting up for the Vixens. Both teams scored 14, taking the score to 38-36 at the end of the third quarter. In the final quarter, the Flyers just had the edge and Justine Tilson made some key interceptions, which allowed them to pull the game back to a draw. The final score was 48-48.

 

Aircare Thunder v Welland Valley Blinders  

Next Aircare Thunder were up against the Welland Valley Blinders. Thunder started with real intention. Lily Horton on form in the Thunder attacking circle from the first whistle. Emily Bolt kept things tight at the other end of the court for Thunder too, allowing little into the circle for the Blinders to attempt a shot. At half time the score stood at 21 – 9 to Thunder. In the third quarter, Thunder continued to increase their lead with Charlotte Mathers controlling the centre court. In the final quarter Gemma Neil and Vanessa Barker worked hard together for Blinders to curtail the Thunder attack. The game ended 39-16 to Thunder.

 

CC Wellbeing v Turners Tornadoes

In the final game of the day, CC Wellbeing took to the court against Turners Tornadoes. The first quarter saw Wellbeing take a quick and decisive lead. Weller Arnold was formidable in the Wellbeing attack. By the end of the first quarter CC Wellbeing were 15 goals ahead with the score at 21-6. In the second quarter Jess Mason and Charlotte Stokes worked well in the Turners centre court, putting some great connecting play together. However, it wasn’t enough to slow down Wellbeing, with the score at 31-9 at half time. In the third quarter, Wellbeing continued their momentum. The work rate and pace from Tash Litchfield throughout the court did not slow. In the final quarter, Shrelle PB did not give up in the Turners defensive circle, managing to keep Wellbeing to a single figure for the quarter. At the final whistle, the score was 54-15 to CC Wellbeing.
