Winter League 2021/2022 Round 15

Snowfinders v Foxton Flyers

The first match of the day was a rematch of last week’s Plate semi-final between Snowfinders and Foxton Flyers. Snowfinders were keen to prove themselves after last week’s defeat, and shooting duo Christie Ziebis and Kiera Douglas worked the circle well together, to put Snowfinders in the lead 26-15 at half time.

Flyers Justine Tilson and Jackie Latham entered the second half with determination, with excellent play at both ends of the court. However, it wasn’t enough this week and Snowfinders took the win 50-39.

Siamo Sirens v Welland Valley Blinders

Next up was a close battle between two of the league’s newer teams, Siamo Sirens and Welland Valley Blinders. Siamo Sirens goal attack, Aimee McGrory, and keeper, Carla Sharpe, played well in the first half to secure the lead at half time by a narrow margin, 23-18.

However, keen not to let the game run away with them, Blinders goal defence, Karena Matthew-Donawa stepped it up a gear and made it extremely hard for Sirens shooters to put points on the board. At the other end of the court, Blinders shooter Jo Macdonald upped the score for her team. Despite the efforts of Sirens Centre, Olivia O’Brien, they couldn’t fend off Blinders, who took the win 32-30.

Aircare Thunder v Vanelli Vixens

The next game was between Aircare Thunder and Vanelli Vixens. Vixens started strong, with excellent defence from B Clasper in the circle, slowing down Thunders attacking end well. At half time, Vixens had doubled Thunder score, 18-9.

Despite the slow start for Thunder, goal attack Sarah Bates, put in an excellent performance in the second half to bring the game almost neck and neck. A battle of the centre court then ensued between Vixens Katie Bensi and Thunders Kate Mathers, who both worked tirelessly to turn over ball. In the end, Vixens took the win with a close margin of 4 goals, 35-31.

Turners Tornados v Aircare Lightning

Aircare Lightning followed their counterparts, in the next game against Turners Tornados. Both teams came out fighting, however excellent defence by Lightnings Amy Langton helped Lightning secure the lead at half time, 26-17.

Charlotte Mathers continued to show strength in the centre court for Lightning, helping to maintain her teams lead throughout. Turners were determined throughout, and the defensive efforts of Shrelle P-B didn’t go unnoticed, picking up MVP by both teams and the scorers. However, the game finished 49-30 in favour of Aircare Lightning.

Foxton Mavericks v Harborough Harriers

The penultimate match of the day saw Foxton Mavericks and Harborough Harriers take to court. Foxton Mavericks, who have been formidable this season, were unrelenting throughout. Mavericks shooters, Karry Arrowsmith and Nat Billington, dominated the circle to quickly put them well in the lead. Despite some brilliant defence by Harriers Lindsay Collins, Mavericks led 34-8 at half time.

It was more of the same in the second half and whilst Harriers Centre Gill Hancock linked well with both her defensive end and shooters, she was matched by Mavericks Jenny Dance who turned over multiple balls. The final score was 64-19 to Foxton Mavericks.

Club Corezze vs CC Wellbeing

The final match of the day was set to be an exciting match up between Club Corezze and CC Wellbeing. Both teams have delivered some very strong performances this season, and Club Corezzes Mia Baker and Emily Morgan linked beautifully in the centre court to help Club Corezze secure a narrow lead at half time, 29-22.

Despite the pin-point shooting by CC Wellbeings Janet Smith and Hannah Stratton, Club Corezze’s Claire Price dominated her defensive circle and turned over endless balls. Whilst CC Wellbeing put in a strong performance, Club Corezze came out on top and took the win, 66-48.
