Winter League 2021/2022 Round 18

Aircare Thunder v Harborough Harriers

The day started on Saturday with a hard fought battle on Court 1, with Aircare Thunder facing Harborough Harriers. The Harriers started the game the strongest. Sophie Weston made some key interceptions in the centre court, meaning the first quarter ended 8-6 to the Harriers. In the second quarter, despite some spot on shooting by Emma Walker for the Harriers, Aircare Thunder pulled the game back and led 21-20 at half time. In the second half, Amy Langton kept things tight in the defence and, with some great positioning, Wendy Hayward provided those connecting balls through to the Thunder attacking end, allowing Thunder to maintain their lead and edge ahead slightly more.  The game ended 40-37 to Thunder.

Foxton Mavericks v Siamo Sirens

The game on court 2 was a different beast. Foxton Mavericks took to the court against Siamo Sirens with intent and did not hold back. In the first half, Ellissia Semo and Carla Sharpe worked well together in the Siamo attacking circle when they were able to get the ball to the circle.  However, Emily Bryan was prolific for the Mavericks with turnovers in the centre court. At half time the score was 46-6 to the Mavericks.

In the third quarter, Julia Trapp was outstanding in the Mavericks defence, keeping the Sirens to just one goal, with the score at 68-7.  In the final quarter Olivia O’Brien worked her socks of in the Siamo centre bib, not stopping until the final whistle.  Mavericks were the winners 89-11.

Club Correze v Turners Tornadoes

Club Correzze faced Turners Tornadoes. The Turners defence started well with Ashrelle P-B in the Goal Keeper position and Benita Percival at wing defence, limiting Correze to 13 goals in the first quarter and then the second. Sophie Chester also played well for Turners, converting her shots to goals whenever she had an opportunity. At half time the score was 26-9 to Correze.

In the third quarter Correze upped the pace and tightened their defensive play further. Kate Garner, in the Correze defence, further limited the balls making it through to the shooters. In the final quarter, Lexi Moakes controlled the centre court for Correze and Andrea Flewitt did not miss a shot. The game ended 64-17 to Correze.

Snowfinders v CC Wellbeing

Snowfinders found themselves short of players on Saturday and played their game against CC Wellbeing with six players. Still, in the first quarter, Tilly Higgs and Sabrina Berry teamed up in the Snowfinders defence to restrict the flow of balls into the Wellbeing attack, keeping them to 14 goals.  The score at the end of the first quarter was 14-7.

In the second quarter it was the turn of the Wellbeing defence to shine, with Sofi Mills picking up interception after interception. By half time, it was 29-11 to Wellbeing.  The second half saw Wellbeing’s Janet Smith continue to shoot on target and further the goal difference between the two teams. Becca Waymen continued to challenge in the Snowfinders defence, but it wasn’t enough.  The final score was 64-24 to CC Wellbeing.

Foxton Flyers v Welland Valley Blinders

One of the last games of the day saw Foxton Flyers play against Welland Valley Blinders. The first quarter saw Leah Raby start the game on excellent form for Flyers in the attacking circle.  Flyers took the first quarter 14-9.  In the second quarter, the Blinders regrouped and moved Essie Matthew-Shaw into their defensive circle.  She gave the Flyers shooters issues for the rest of the game, restricting the space well.

At half time the Flyers were leading 25-16. The second half continued in a similar vein with some closely fought balls. Justine Tilson, the Flyers centre, just had the edge though, turning over the ball for the Flyers shooters to convert to goal. Although the Flyers won, Welland Valley Blinders came away with another point for getting more than half of their opponent’s score.

Vanelli Vixens v Aircare Lightning

The final game on court two was Vanelli Vixens v Aircare Lightning. Vanelli Vixens took charge from the very first centre pass with Chloe Woodward making her presence known from the off.  At the end of the first quarter, the Vixens led 12-4.

The second and third quarters saw a dynamic battle in the centre court between Vanelli’s Elena Bensi and Lightning’s Charlotte Mathers. B Clasper also moved into the Vixen Goal Keeper bib and did a great job of holding back the Lightning attack.  By the end of the third quarter the score was 34-12 to Vixens. Stef Johnson was not giving up in the Lightning shooting circle though, adding five more to Lightning’s tally in the final quarter. The game ended 49-17 to Vixens.
