Winter League 2021/2022 Round 22

 

Aircare Thunder vs Club Correze

The league came to a conclusion this weekend with the final round of fixtures between the twelve teams, with Club Correze taking on Aircare Thunder first. Club Correze took control of the game early on, with the attacking trio of Ruth Taylor, Lexi Moakes and Jo Hitchcock making light work of the Thunder defence. At half time, the score was 29-13 to Club Correze.

Thunder stepped up their game in the second half. Heather Wainwright and Kate Mathers turned over ball for their side and put on the pressure to slow down the Correze attack. Club Correze pushed on and took the win 57-28.

 

Vanelli Vixens vs Turners Tornadoes

On court 2, Turners Tornadoes took to court against a strong Vanelli Vixens side. True to previous form, Vixens aimed to secure their spot near the top of the table and showed strength across all areas of the court. Elena Bensi and Chloe Woodward linked up well in the centre court to feed in some excellent balls to their shooters. The half time score was in favour of the Vixens, 28-9.

Tornados came out fighting in the second half, with Jess Mason at Centre supporting shooter, Becky Grealish, to double their goals scored in the first half.  However, Vixens Elena Bensi loaded the pressure in the defensive circle, making life hard for Tornadoes shooters. Vixens proved too strong for Tornadoes and took the win 65-27.

 

Siamo Sirens vs Foxton Flyers

The next game of the day was between Siamo Sirens and Foxton Flyers. It was a game of attack for both sides, both teams putting a good number of shots up in the first half of the game. However, it was Flyers who had the upper hand and Leah Raby at Goal Attack nearly doubling the score of Siamo at half time. Justine Tillson dominated the centre court, helping secure Flyers the lead at half time, 27-14.

In the latter half of the game, Sirens tried to keep in touching distance of Flyers. Shooting pair Ellissia Semo and Catherine King worked the circle and shot consistently throughout the game. Despite their best efforts, Sirens couldn’t close the gap and Flyers took the win, 59-28.

 

Harborough Harriers vs CC Wellbeing

Next to take to court was Harborough Harriers vs CC Wellbeing. CC Wellbeing quickly took control of the game and gained a decent lead by half time. Katie Davies and Jackie Brookes, in defence and the centre court respectively, were formidable for CC Wellbeing, helping to keep the Harriers score line down. At half time, the score was 23-8 to CC Wellbeing.

Harriers tried to respond in the second half, with Lindsay Collins putting a lot of pressure on CC Wellbeing shooters to force errors and turn over ball. Sophie Weston also worked tirelessly to work the ball up the court and feed balls to the shooters. However, CC Wellbeing were too strong for Harriers and took the win 45-18.

 

Welland Valley Blinders vs Aircare Lightning

The penultimate game of the day saw Welland Valley Blinders against Aircare Lightning. Lightning quickly found their flow and took an early lead in the game. A notable mention to Lightnings Charlotte Mathers, who received Most Valuable Player by both sides and the scorers, for her efforts in the centre court. Lightning was in the lead at half time, with a score of 33-12.

Blinders Goal Defence, Karena Matthew-Donowa, picked up lots of ball in the Lightning shooting end, which was rewarded by shooter Becky O’Neill upping the Blinders goal tally at the other end of the court. However, Lightning pushed on and took the win, with the final score of 54-32.

 

Snowfinders vs Foxton Mavericks

The final game of the day saw Snowfinders and top of the table, Foxton Mavericks take to court. Mavericks were quick to show their class and Julia Trapp closed down the Snowfinders attack with ease, limiting them to only 5 goals in the first half. At half time, the score was 30-5 in favour of Mavericks.

After a positional reshuffle, Snowfinders came out determined to come back at Mavericks, with Poppy Mayer showing talent in both the attacking and defensive end. Tilly Higgs at Goal Defence worked tirelessly to starve Mavericks shooters of ball, linking well with teammates to turnover ball. However, Emily Bryan fed some great balls into shooter Nat Billington, who was able to convert with ease. The score ended 66-17 to Foxton Mavericks.
