Winter League 2021/2022 Round 22

Foxton Mavericks vs Welland Valley Blinders

Saturday’s fixtures kicked off with top of the league, Foxton Mavericks, taking on bottom of the league, Welland Valley Blinders. Foxton Mavericks started with intent, with Nat Billington shooting with ease, despite some strong defensive pressure from Blinders Karena Matthew-Donowa. At half time, Mavericks were in the lead 39 goals to Blinders 2.

Blinders Krish Darji led her team from the centre court in the second half, however Darji was matched by Mavericks Jenny Dance turning over ball in the centre court and working it down to the attacking end. Mavericks took the game, with an impressive 85-6 win.

Siamo v Snowfinders

Snowfinders took to the court again on Saturday, facing Siamo Sirens. The game started close, with the teams fairly evenly matched in the first quarter. Amy McGrory got her eye in quickly in the Siamo shooting circle helping Siamo edge slightly ahead in the first quarter 8-7. The second quarter saw some great play in the centre court, with Poppy Murphy and Becca Wayman battling for every ball.

Snowfinders got the edge and gained some momentum in their comeback taking it to 17-11 in their favour by half time. Carla Sharpe played well in the Siamo defensive circle taking the wind out of Snowfinders sails and limiting them to six in the third quarter. However, Tori Wayman stepped it up again in the Snowfinders' attack in the final quarter taking them to a 34-22 victory.

CC Wellbeing vs Foxton Flyers

CC Wellbeing were out to prove themselves this week against Foxton Flyers, after a narrow defeat last week to the Vanelli Vixens. After a close first quarter, CC Wellbeing found their stride and shooter Allie Bailey helped her side pull away from Flyers. At half time, the score was 30-19 to CC Wellbeing.

The second half saw some excellent match ups in the Flyers attacking third, with Justine Tillson and Sara Mangan working the circle well to increase their side’s goal tally. However, this was matched by some excellent defence by CC Wellbeing’s Emma Weir and Hannah Stratton, who put pressure on the Flyers attack end. At full time, the game finished in favour of CC Wellbeing, 58-40.

Harborough Harriers vs Aircare Lightning

Next to take to court with a mid-table clash between Harborough Harriers and Aircare Lightning. In what was set to be a close game, both sides started strongly, but it wasn’t long before Lightning started to dominate the court. Lightnings shooters, Emma Hadkiss and Hannah Forman, shared the shooting load and gave their side a 29-17 lead at half time.

Harriers defence, Wendy Cray, was keen to stop the game running away from her side and linked up well with Gill Hancock in the centre court to turnover ball. However, Lightnings Yvonne Moore in the defensive circle limited Harriers shots at goal. The game ended with Lightning taking the win, 47-31.

Aircare Thunder vs Siamo Sirens

The second Aircare team took to court next, with Aircare Thunder taking on Siamo Sirens. Aircare Thunder quickly took the lead with the help of their shooter, Sarah Bates, rarely missing a shot. Thunder continued to show strength across the court with Kate Mathers at centre and Maisie Williamson in defence stepping up for their team. At half time, Thunder had a 12 goal lead.

Siamo came out fighting in the second half, with Keely Russell in defence and Catherine King in attack working tirelessly to keep their side in the game. Despite their best efforts, Thunder pushed on and took the win, 44-19.

Snowfinders vs Turners Tornadoes

The final game of the day was set to be a close from the start, with Snowfinders and Turners Tornadoes stepping onto court. Tornados started strong and won the first quarter, with Sophie Chester feeding the shooting circle with ease, backed up by precise shooting from Laura Brooks, who rarely missed a shot. After a closely contested second quarter, Snowfinders were leading 15-14 at half time.

Snowfinders pressed on in the second half, keen to keep Tornadoes out of the game. Despite some tough defensive pressure from Tornadoes Molly Beard, Christie Ziebis and Tori Wayman showed strength and pace in the shooting circle, helping Snowfinders pull away from Tornadoes. At the other end of the court, Grace Clarke made it extremely tricky for Tornadoes to get the ball into the shooters and helped Snowfinders secure the win, 40-24.
